Something useful for the audio and video collectors. MediaCoder is a freeware application to convert to and from many audio and video compression formats in a easy-to-use interface.
I currently use it to convert Flash Videos (*.flv) to AVIs although it supports most of the common formats used nowadays. Some of the supported audio formats are MP3, Ogg Vorbis, RealAudio, WMA, WAV. Supported video formats include AVI, WMV, Matroska, MP4, Quicktime, MPEG I/II and many more.
Transcoding can be done a single file at a time or applied to batches of files. If you're a novice user, you can simply use the defaults or for advanced users, select the required codec and tweak the settings before transcoding.
The best thing is that it's fully standalone and does not require installation or registration of additional codecs and DirectShow filters, minimizing the chance of conflicting codecs and whatnot. However due to legal restrictions, you have to install certain encoders notably Helix Producer (for Real formats) and Windows Media Encoder (umm, for Windows Media formats) separately.
